Water Rescue

Firefighters helped save two dogs and a deer that had broken through the ice last weekend.  A person called to report that a dog had fallen through the ice on a pond.  Firefighters responded and found a dog had fallen through the ice.
It was reported the dog was going up and down in the water.  It was estimated that the dog had been in the water for about 30 minutes at that point.  A rescuer in a cold-weather suit was able to reach into the water and grab him.  The dog was immediately taken to a pet hospital in an emergency vehicle.

That same day, Indianapolis Firefighters went  to another apartment complex on the City's far Eastside.  Families watched as a deer walking on the icy pond  fell through the ice.  Firefighters arrived and were able to put a rope around the deer to save it from drowning.  The deer had been in the water for about 45 minutes.  Indianapolis Animal Care & Control took the deer from the scene and once it was stabliized, released it back to a wooded area.

ln the past two weeks firefighters have successfully rescued two other dogs standed on ice or in the water.

Retention ponds are built to help with storm water drainage and to prevent flooding. Over twenty five people have died in recent years in Central Indiana retention ponds.  Residents are warned to stay away from these ponds for any recreational purpose and it is extremely important in ice conditions.  Residents are warned to stay away from the ice in similar situations and to call 911 immediately.   Good Samaritans’ can easily find themselves in the same trouble and most likely will not survive the cold water near as long as an animal. The cold water can overtake you in a matter of moments and people can become part of the problem.
